Global FPCB market moving in positive direction, say sources

Flexible PCB makers both in Taiwan and Japan recorded strong performance in the second quarter indicating that the global FPCB industry is moving forward in a positive direction, according to industry sources.

Taiwan-based FPCB maker Career Technology saw its gross margin advance to 27.24% in the second quarter from the 22.61% in the first, while peer company Flexium Interconnect saw its gross margin climb to 26.18% from 21.48% during the same period, according to data released by the companies.

Another FPCB maker Taiflex Scientific posted an EPS of NT$2.22 in the second quarter with a gross margin of 24-24.5%, the company noted.

NOK Corporation, the largest FPCB maker in Japan, has posted operating income of 2.765 billion yen (US$32.93 million) for first-quarter fiscal 2010 (April-June 2012) compared to substantial losses posted a year earlier.

Japan-based PCB material supplier Arisawa recently revised its guidance for the entire year of fiscal 2012 to a net profit of 490 million yen from a loss of 220 million yen projected previously.

Global Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) Market to Reach $76.2 Billion by 2015

The world market for PCBs is projected to register about $76.2 billion by the year 2015. Though tempered by the economic recession in the last two years, the market is expected to register a substantial increase in its revenue post recession, ably supported by growing demand in Automotive Electronics and the rapidly growing Asian market.

As ubiquitous components that act as the foundation of any electronic equipment/gadget, PCBs have over the years evolved from uncomplicated single and double-sided Plated-Through-Hole (PTH) to multi-layered PCBs. Electronic components account for a considerable portion of the overall value of materials consumed in the production of cars. HDI printed boards follow, driven by the robust mobile phone, notebook PC and digital still camera sectors. China's status as the major manufacturing base for these devices is proving an advantage.

Flexible types make up the third key segment in the industry. These find broad use in communication devices, consumer and automotive electronics, particularly mobile phones, digital still cameras, laptops and LCD monitors and TVs.

The developments are encouraging local suppliers to strengthen their lines even amid cost and other challenges. Many are planning to expand capacity and product selections.

The following are some of the key trends in China's PCB industry:

The majority of makers yielded to climbing material and labor outlay and adjusted their prices in the past three months. Others kept or lowered quotes to attract orders from existing and new clients.
Investment plans indicate growing support for the HDI category because of high returns. At present, only about 20 companies are engaged in the line due to elevated costs of required equipment.
Enterprises are introducing models with higher density to match the miniaturization trend in portable electronics. The units have more layers and reduced line width/spacing and hole diameter.

Copper foil prices up another 5%

Quotes for copper foil have risen for the fourth consecutive month, up by 5% in December 2010 compared with November, according to industry sources. The upward trend reflects strengthening copper prices.

Three-month copper prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) recently topped US$9,000/ton. LME copper closed at US$9,015/ton on December 8.

The sources pointed out that if copper continues to trade at above US$8,500/ton, copper foil prices for January 2011 are likely to continue trending up. But PCB manufacturers will be reluctant to accept any higher prices due to the start of the traditional first-quarter slow season, the sources said.

Demand for HDI boards used in smartphones and tablet PCs remained stable in November, but regular PCBs started showing weakness due to seasonality, according to copper foil provider Co-Tech. Meanwhile, CCL customers had to work off their inventory during the month as demand for IT and consumer electronics products slowed down, said the Taiwan-based firm.

Co-Tech said its November revenues decreased 12.8% sequentially to NT$406 million, affected by falling shipments. The company expects sales to bounce back in January when demand from CCL customers picks up.
